Tears are produced by the lacrimal gland under the upper lid and drain into the nose from small holes on the lids close to the nose. These tears are essential for ocular health. However excess tear production from blockage of the tear drainage pathway can result in the water building up and overflowing onto the cheek. Blocked tear ducts can also result in recurrent infections. Investigations and treatments are carried out at Eye Doctors. Drops, dilatation or reposition of the small holes or surgery to replace the drainage pathway may be required.
